The two men explain that Dana committed suicide because she believed the book was cursed. The death of Dana strengthens Holden's relationship with Marty, as Holden has been having a one-sided crush on him since childhood.The friends have a night out at a local bar with Marty and Dana's brother Brett. In the morning, they observe Brett stealing from another patron and chase him down the road, only to see an old man they believe is an apparition. As they return to the cabin, they discover that their backpacks have been emptied out of their contents except for sunglasses and a flashlight, along with some bloody handprints on a door. They decide to go to the sheriff's office, but the two men attempt to delay them, revealing that many people have been disappearing from the area. While they are at the sheriff's office, Holden and Curt mention that something is happening every thirty years. The women become suspicious of the cabin owners when they discover a small wooden idol in Holden's pocket. After Marty attempts to take it out, Holden becomes enraged and stabs him in the neck with a pencil. Dana runs outside for help while Jules attempts CPR on Marty inside the cabin; she witnesses Holden hang himself in front of her eyes. Dana is intercepted by two people from the sheriff's office who turn out to be part of a larger conspiracy. The sheriff and his deputies, all possessed by demons, drive the women back to the cabin where they meet Holden and Curt. The men reveal that they have been hired by a company called Sitterson and Qualtrough to supply humans for ritual sacrifices to appease an ancient god that lives underneath their cabin. Curt attempts rape on Jules until he is shot dead by Holden. Meanwhile, Holden reveals his history with Marty: the two were young lovers until Marty started showing signs of aggression towards him in college due to premature pubescence.
